Hey Everybody in our Friday Follies Club!
I hope the weather where you are is as nice as it is here in Music City. It’s more like Spring and we are just loving it. And speaking of “loving it,” we here in Fargo Country are so excited about our second “Heart Hug.” You know the first one – it is called “Be Your Best!” You’re More Than Enough.” And the second one is called “Love On Purpose,” and Brenda did them both in those beautiful, bright and bold colors of pink, red, and blue – they’re just beautiful! We told you we’d have a series of them. I mean I can see different ones in different rooms. We need reminders to pick us up and remind us we’re okay and everything’s gonna’ be all right.
I received the following question and I’ll answer it because I get lots of questions about this song…
“Hi Donna, I’m Bob and I’ve been following your music for a long time. Your Friday Follies are always fun to read and I was especially curious about your last post about “Forever Is As Far As I Can Go.” Thank you for allowing us to get a glimpse into your creative mind. I’m always fascinated by how songwriters come up with such beautiful songs that touch people’s hearts. I especially love songs that have depth and meaning, not just the simple and obvious ones. That’s why I wanted to ask you how you came about a song called “A Song With No Music.” How did you come up with the idea and the lyrics? What inspired you? Do you write with a subject in mind or do you just free write to see what develops or is it much more complex?
I hope you don’t mind me asking these questions. I’m just genuinely interested in your creative process and how you express yourself through music. I think you have a unique and original voice that deserves to be heard and appreciated. I’m looking forward to hearing more new music. By the way, your current cd, ALL BECAUSE OF YOU, has become one of my favorites! My wife tells me you wrote “One Of The Good Guys” to describe me. LOL”
Thank you for the question, Bob, about one of my favorite songs that I’ve written. As people used to come through the autograph line and I would ask them questions, they would tell me stories about their lives. Rather often, they would come across as unhappy, and you know me – I just want everybody to be happy. Maybe it was just a collection of feelings, but I distinctly remember I wanted to write a song to express emptiness. In order to do that, I came up with the song called “Song With No Music” to symbolize someone whose life had lost its “music,” its joy. So in the song I created the story of one woman talking to another about her life. The chorus is…She sang a song with no music and words with no melody of all the bitter seasons of life / She was an unloved daughter, an unhappy mother, what was left of an unwanted wife. If you haven’t heard the song and would like to, it’s on my ON THE MOVE album on Warner Brothers.
I hope you’re all doing great – healthy and happy and loving life! I miss you and send you lots of love.
Love,
Donna
P.S. And to all of you who’ve asked…I’m almost finished with the novel! Hot dog!
